Snow Kiddin’

My husband Paul will tell you – accurately – that I mostly roll my eyes HARRRRRRD when he starts talking about The Good Old Days when kids were tough and everything was better, but he does have one snow day story that I love.

One winter day, Paul and his sisters woke up to accumulated snow and blustery weather blowing it all around into huge drifts. They immediately turned on the radio to await the inevitable announcement. Schools everywhere in Wayne County called off. North, south, east, west of Norwayne. Errybody.

Except Norwayne. They waited and waited and waited and when the time came, their mother told their disbelieving little selves to bundle up and walk out the lane. And the bus came. Slowly and carefully, but it came. Off to school they went.

Everybody made it home at the end of the day. They still couldn’t believe Norwayne hadn’t called school. Oh well. Administrators work in mysterious ways.

I don’t know how long it was until they heard why.

At this point in the story, it’s important to remember that this happened long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and there were no cell phones.

So when the Norwayne superintendent went out in the wee hours to check on road conditions in the district, he didn’t have any way to let someone know that he had slipped right off the road into a ditch, where he stayed until someone came along with a tractor to get him out. And by then all the kids were at school, and what were they gonna do?

So I don’t know whether you’re mad tonight that your administration has called off school or because it hasn’t. But either way, it’s probably not because the superintendent is stuck in a ditch.
